On Tuesday, 9/20, the Boys Varsity played Herbert Hoover at home, winning decisively, 6-0 (click here for game stats), and the Girls Varsity traveled to Point Pleasant, where they walked away with a hard fought 0-0 draw. On Thursday, 9/22, both teams hit the road, with the Boys heading to Sissonville and the Girls just a few hills away, in Poca. The Boys played a flat first period, with the score 0-0 at the half. Again, the Irish awakened early 2nd half, when Senior #8 Quinton Mays found the upper left 90 of the net off a right-to-left volley from 30 yards out on the right side in the 47th minute. However, the celebration was short-lived. A St. Joe foul off the top-left of the 18 yard box setup a free kick by Indians #11 Anthony Rinehart, which made it past an Irish 4-man wall and the keeper, tying the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute. The Irish continued offensive pressure, finding the net 3 more times (57th minute - #3 Stephen Jenkins off free kick by #11 Troy Silva, 65th minute - shot by #2 Brian Conaty from right top of 18 yard box, unassisted 77th minute - header by #10 Zach Dougherty off free kick by #9 Robert Null), giving the Irish a 4-1 victory. The Girls again fought hard in their match against the Dots. A PK in the 2nd half gave Poca momentum, resulting in a 0-2 Lady Irish loss. On Saturday (9/24) the Girls and Boys hosted St. Albans in a home doubleheader at the Kennedy Center. The Girls played first, falling behind by 3 in the first period. The ladies found a scoring opportunity late in the game, when Senior #18 Lydia Pierson found a breakaway opportunity in the 78th minute. Final score, St. Albans - 4, St. Joe - 1. Lady Irish Keeper Rachael Lee had a total of 8 saves. Unlike the 9/22 Sissonville match, the Boys struck early in their match against St. Albans. Junior #3 Stephen Jenkins scored in the 7th minute, assisted by #27 Sam Bolano. A flurry of goals late in the 1st (#25 Josh Pierson w/header off free kick service by #9 Robert Null in 31st minute, St. Albans own goal in 34th minute, Brian Conaty in the 40th minute, assisted by #4 Evan Bolano) sent the Irish up by 4 at the half. The second half ushered in an opportunity for reserve players to get varsity playing time. The match ended in a 4-0 Irish win. Sophomore keeper #18 Jonathan Armstead made his varsity debut with three saves and a clean sheet. |
