Week #5 started off on Tuesday, 9/11 with the Boys at home vs Sissonville and the Girls traveling to South Point to take on the Lady Pointers.

The girls struck early, with a goal by #17 Sydney Porter in the 2nd minute of play.  #18 Griffin Dempsey found net in the 22nd minute, putting the Lady Irish up by 2 midway through the first period.  However St. Joe's second goal appeared to awake the Lady Pointers, who scored 7 minutes later, putting the score at 2-1 at the half.  South Point decided to strike early in the 2nd, with #8 Elaine Gore scoring in the 43rd minute and again later in the 63rd minute, putting the Lady Irish down by one late in the game.  Griffin Dempsey found another opportunity in the 67th minute, evening the score at 3 all.  The final Irish score came in the 69th minute on a goal by #16 Libby Goetz, sealing a 4-3 Lady Irish win. The boys faced Sissonville at home, with painful memories of the tough 0-1 loss to the Indians decided by PKs in the 2011 Section II semi-final still lingering in the back of the St. Joe players' and coaches' minds.  Irish #3 Stephen Jenkins put the Irish on the board in the 19th minute and teammate #14 Lakin Brooks added another goal to the new scoreboard in the 32nd minute, setting the score at 2-0 at the half.  Sissonville stayed vigilant and found an opportunity off of a breakdown in the Irish defense in the 49th minute, putting the score at 2-1.  At that point, the game seemed to slow down, with both teams appearing to run out of steam and the clock appearing to be running in slow motion.  Sissonville could not capitalize on a couple of opportunties to even the score and St. Joe's Brooks scored in the 77th minute of a nice pass by #23 Anthony Rabel in the 77th minute putting the final score at St. Joe - 3, Sissonville - 1.  Click here for the match box score.

Both teams had another Thursday bye in preparation for 2012 Bishop's Cup play on Friday and Saturday.  The Boys and Girls both played late matches on Friday.

The Girls went up against a strong, fast, physical team from Wheeling Central. Central's #3 Bailey Clark and #4 Ashton Cross both had hat tricks, setting the final score at a 6 - 0 St. Joe loss.

The boys played Parkersburg Catholic and scored twice within the first 10 minutes of play.  A Parkersburg Catholic own goal in the 14th minute put St. Joe up by 3 going into the half.  Parkersburg stayed determined and #3 Halie Yeomans was able to sneak one past St. Joe defenders in the 46th minute to put the Crusaders on the board.  St. Joe scored 4 more times in the second half to set the final score at St. Joe 7, PC - 1.  Click here for the match box score.

On Saturday, the Girls faced Herbert Hoover in the Consolation match and the Boys faced Charleston Catholic for the Cup championship.

St. Joe and Herbert Hoover were scoreless in the first half.  Lady Irish #16 Libby Goetz found net in the 51st minute to put the Irish up by one.  However, the lead was short-lived when Herber Hoover answered with scores in the 53rd and 59th minute and held onto the lead to hand the St. Joe girls their second loss in the tournament.  Click here for the box score.

The boys faced a nationally-ranked Charleston Catholic squad in championship match play.  Catholic spared no time to get on the board, scoring in the 8th, 12th, and 19th minute to go up by 3 at the half.  Another Catholic goal in the 46th minute put St. Joe down 0-4 and facing a shutout.  However, a nice string of passes in the 63rd minute setup a St. Joe goal by #3 Stephen Jenkins. St. Joe was able to score again on some confusion in the box on a corner kick, which led to a tap-in by #14 Lakin Brooks.  Catholic held onto the lead to win 4-2, sealing their 5th straight Cup win.
