October 12, 2010 @ Nitro High School - The boys varsity team came from behind in the 2nd period with 5 unanswered goals to defeat Nitro 6 - 2 in Tuesday night action. The match was scoreless for most of the 1st half, as both teams jockeyed for an opportunity. A Nitro foul in the 35th minute just outside the left top of the 18 yard box setup a free kick by Irish Senior #32 Nick Turner. The well-placed shot was deflected by the keeper, but the loose ball found the left foot of Freshman #28 Brian Conaty, who put the ball past the keeper, placing the Irish on the board 1 - nil at the half. Nitro came out pressuring in the 2nd period, resulting in two Wildcat goals within the first 6 minutes that quickly erased the Irish lead . Nitro Sophomore #2 Evan Eich scored both Wildcat goals, the first coming on a beautiful free kick in the 44th minute from just outside the right-top of the 18 yard box, following by a tap in off an off-goal shot that hit the crossbar in the the 45th minute. St. Joe re-grouped and pushed back. Junior #4 Evan Bolano scored in the 48th minute off a nice through ball from Nick Turner, evening the score back at 2 -2. Both teams stepped up their play and continued the pressure. Nick Turner connected from just inside the 18 yard box off a throw in from Junior #11 Troy Silva from the right sideline during the 63rd minute, pushing the Irish ahead and noticeably diminishing Nitro's level of play. Nick Turner scored again in the 65th minute off a deflected shot-on-goal by Evan Bolano, and again in the 68th minute on a breakaway triggered by a nice upfield pass from Senior #2 Ethan Karnes. The final Irish goal came just a minute later, when Junior #15 Quinton Mays finished on a breakaway in the 69th minute, assisted by Evan Bolano. Click here for boys game stats.
