SJHS Season Week #8 Recap

posted Oct 11, 2010, 11:22 AM by Robert Mays
Last week was a busy one for the boys and girls teams, leaving yours truly with precious little time to post an action recap until now.

The boys team hit the road on Tuesday, 10/5, for varsity and JV matches against Saint Albans. The Red Devils put a point on the board in the 32nd minute and the Irish trailed until the 75th minute when Junior #25 Josh Pierson headed the ball in off a corner kick scramble inside the 6 yard box.  It looked like St. Joe would walk away with a draw, but St. Albans went ahead in the 79th minute on a breakaway run which left many St. Joe fans in the crowd asking for an offside call, to no avail.  The final score was St. Joe - 1, Saint Albans 2. JV play left both teams tied at nil-nil after 30 minutes and the onset of darkness.

On Wednesday, 10/6, the boys JV team headed to Spring Valley High School for round robin match play against Cabell Midland and Spring Valley in 35-minute period play.  St. Joe placed 3 shots on goal and Cabell Midland countered with 4, but neither team could find the net, ending the match in a nil-nil draw. St. Joe jumped ahead early in play against Spring Valley, when  Freshman #22 Matthew Karnes headed the ball in off a corner kick by Freshman #19 Torin Walters in the 4th minute.
The Timberwolves awoke after the score, replying with goals in the 6th, 17th, 30th, and 32nd minutes.  The match ended with a score of St. Joe 1, Spring Valley 4.

The boys varsity played to a draw with the Boyd County boys, 0 - 0.

Saturday, 10/9, hosted home action for the boys varsity against Linsly and away action for the girls varsity versus Saint Albans.

The boys went ahead early in thier match against Linsley, when Senior #32 Nick Turner scored on a breakaway in the 9th minute.  Coach Karnes had to goto the bench for defensive back subs midway through the 1st period when Junior #25 Josh Pierson and Junior #10 Zach Dougherty collided during an attempt to head the ball out of the goal area. The Irish scored again just before the half when Senior #6 Cody Lobo fired a shot from the top of the 6 yard box off a set of nice one-touches from Freshman #12 Vincent Mays and Junior #4 Evan Bolano. The boys had three more shots on goal during the 2nd period, but were unable to convert another goal, ending the match 2 - 0.

The girls also jumped ahead early in their match against Saint Albans.  Senior #20 Niki Lobo sent one into the net off a rebound out of the box on an Irish corner kick in the 6th minute of play.  The Lady Irish scored again in the 46th minute when Niki Lobo headed in a ball off a corner kick by Senior #23 Hannah Edwards. However, momentum was quickly dashed when what appeared to most onlookers to be a header was ruled by the officials as a handball on the Irish inside the 18 yard box, allowing the Red Devils to score on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.  The score set the Lady Irish off balance, and Saint Albans took advantage, scoring three more goals in quick succession in the 55th, 56th, and 57th minute of play.  Final score, St. Joe - 2, Saint Albans - 4.
