August 28, 2010 @ YMCA Kennedy Center -

The varsity boys and girls teams hosted the Cabell Midland Knights today at the YMCA Kennedy Center Center complex, ending in a 1-0 win for the boys and a 5-1 loss for the girls.

The boys team kicked off action in the first game and the crowd could quickly see that both teams wanted a different outcome than the 0-0 draw that resulted when the teams last met in scrimmage on August 12. St. Joe placed four shots on goal during the first half, but were unable to get any past the Cabell Midland keeper, Andrew Comer. Irish keeper Rob Blair also stayed busy during the first half, saving three rocketing shots from outside the 18 yard box, two of which were sent in by Cabell Midland striker Chris Molina.  Both teams stepped up their efforts to convert during the second half.  St. Joe went ahead in the 75th minute when Senior # 6 Cody Lobo scored off of a pass from Junior # 9 Robert Null.  The boys team plays Ravenswood away on Tuesday, August 31.

The Irish girls team played a tough first half against the lady Knights, minimizing their opportunities and keeping the Cabell Midland shot count at 2. The lady Irish pressured the Midland keeper with a shot within the 6 yard box by Junior # 18 Lydia Pierson, followed by a rocketing shot at the 18 yard perimeter by Junior # 22 Ferin Neff. The second half quickly turned in favor of Cabell Midland.  The Knights Senior striker #23, Sammi Molina, scored in the 41st minute on a breakaway.  The Knights drive gained momentum and they scored two more goals in minute # 59 (#9 Tara Elswick)  and minute #66 (#11 Kali Morton).  St. Joe answered in the 75th minute when Senior #23 Hannah Edwards scored from just inside the 18 yard perimeter.  The Knights responded with two more goals in the 76th minute (# 9 Tara Elswick) and 82nd minute (#25 Angel Harrison).  The girls team plays Ravenswood at home on Tuesday, August 31.
